  5. In TeX there are 10 keyboard characters which have special meaning.  They are:
  6.  
  7.      \ (backslash)        } (right curly brace)     { (left curly brace)
  8.      @ (at sign)          # (pound sign)            _ (underscore)
  9.      & (ampersand)    % (percent sign)    ~ (tilde)    | (vertical bar)
  10.  
  11. If you need any  of these characters as part of your text  you must precede all
  12. but the tilde and vertical bar with a  \ (backslash) or TeX will interpret them
  13. as a TeX command. To print a tilde you must enter \tilde and for a vertical bar
  14. enter \vbar.

  16. For example, the following input:
  17.  
  18.        Mom sent Tommy to the store and told him to buy 5\# potatoes, a
  19.        half gallon of 2\% milk and two packages of M\&Ms.
  20.  
  21. would result in:

  23. Mom sent Tommy to the  store and told him to buy 5# potatoes,  a half gallon of
  24. 2% milk and two packages of M&Ms.
